Free sitemap check

Does a sitemap list the pages worth finding?

Search engines find pages by following links and by reading a list you give them. This check asks for your sitemap and tells you whether it lists the pages beyond your homepage. Free, no signup, about a minute.

What this check reads

The check asks for /sitemap.xml, the address most sites use. It passes when a sitemap answers and lists more than the homepage, or is a sitemap index pointing to further sitemaps.

  • Pass: a sitemap lists more than the homepage.
  • Mixed: a sitemap exists but lists almost nothing.
  • Fail: no sitemap at /sitemap.xml.

Why it matters

Without the list, search engines still find pages by following links, but new and changed pages are found later, or not at all. Answer engines that draw on search indexes inherit the gap.

What it cannot tell you

A sitemap kept at another address and declared only in robots.txt is not read by this check, so if yours lives elsewhere a Fail here may not apply. Whether each listed page is actually indexed needs Google Search Console or Bing Webmaster Tools.

If it fails: the repair, step by step

The answer leads; the full result follows

This page runs the whole EdenLens free check and puts the answer to its own question first. Underneath you get the rest of the result: up to three verified problems across the page, each with its repair.

Example results

All four are invented businesses. Each page is the engine's own output, published so it can be read without running a check.

The other free tools

Each one runs the same check and leads with its own question.
